Of all of the savings accounts available, it makes sense to select one that meets your financial goals, has the highest interest rate and offers you the most convenience.
Traditional Saving Accounts
Traditional savings accounts are good at providing flexibility—you can withdraw money anytime you like. They generally require very little money to open. They can take direct deposits from your checks so saving is painless.
If you select a bank close to your home that has convenient ATM machines or drive- through tellers where you live or work, that is a big convenience advantage.
However with a little effort you can find a bank that offers all of the above plus a higher yield on your money. As long as you are developing your financial objectives why not seek a high yield savings account?
Financial Objectives: If you have accumulated a significant amount of money, what do you want to do with it? Do you want to make some money on it? If you will not need the funds for awhile, a Certificate of Deposit (CD) might be a good savings account to open.
If you don’t have a large amount of money, but still want to earn interest on what you have, a high yield savings account might be the right account for you.
Access: If you want total flexibility with your money—meaning you want to be able to deposit and withdraw at will, a high yield savings account might be good for you.
If you have some money accumulated and want to be able to withdraw occasionally and want a high interest rate, you might consider a money market account.
Convenience: Being able to deposit and withdraw money easily might be important to you. Probably the bank you are thinking of offers high yield savings accounts so it may be a good idea to look into their savings account choices.
When you are looking into high yield savings accounts consider two things:
- The fee structure if you go below a certain balance amount or withdraw early. Make sure you can maintain the minimums to reduce or eliminate those fees.
- Also, a high yield savings account including a CD, money market or other vehicle requires a lot research. There are many products out there. Find the one that matches your financial objectives, access and convenience needs. And don’t forget about the high yields!
